One-of-a-Kind Sunflower Coasters – A Special Resin Commission

There’s something really special about being trusted to bring someone’s vision to life — especially when it’s a one-off commission. This week, I had the absolute joy of handing over a set of custom-made resin coasters, and I’m still smiling from the lovely feedback. The customer loved them — and honestly, so did I!

The heart of this design was a set of real dried sunflowers — golden, joyful, and full of personality. Each one was carefully placed into the moulds with the first layer of resin. These had to be created in layers as flowers float to the top. You also work blind, as the front of the piece is on the bottom of the mould, so it's never the same as what you see as you are making a piece. If you’ve ever worked with resin, you’ll know it’s a bit of a dance between timing, patience, and a touch of magic. The flowers had to be sealed and arranged just right to keep their shape and colour during the curing process

For the design, I wanted the sunflowers to shine, so I gave them a clear background — simple, clean, and elegant. Around each bloom, I added a soft gold surround to give the pieces warmth and definition without overpowering the natural beauty of the flowers. Once the pour was complete, I waited (not so patiently!) for the resin to cure, checking for bubbles, dust, and all the little details that make or break a perfect finish.

When they finally popped out of the moulds, they were absolutely stunning — glossy, golden, and full of sunshine. It’s always nerve-wracking handing over a custom piece, but seeing my customer’s face when she unwrapped them reminded me exactly why I love what I do.

Every commission tells a story — and this one was a gentle reminder of how nature and creativity can come together to make something truly unique.
